Like going to the beach? Enjoy doing art? Want to see the latest movie? Hutch School Summer camp starts Monday, June 28th and we are looking for kids who want to have fun this summer while they are in Seattle!
During the school year, Hutch School is a uniquely supportive learning environment for school-aged patients and family members who are temporarily living in Seattle while undergoing serious medical treatment at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. We offer school for students from Kindergarten to 12th grade during the school year and during the summer we offer a place to be around kids your age, a place to have fun, and a safe environment where everyone is going through the same transition.
The Hutch School Family Member Day Camp starts on June 28th and goes for 8 weeks until August 20th. Camp takes place Monday through Friday. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays camp is from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm and on Tuesdays and Thursdays camp goes from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. We all meet daily at Hutch School located at 527 Minor Ave N., Seattle, WA 98109 (adjacent to the Pete Gross House) and then take off from there for the daily adventure. Last year we did many fun things such as climbing the rock wall at REI, touring Safeco Field, visiting the Space Needle, ice skating, and going to the beach. We also do many fun art projects such as ceramics, drawings for a quilt, and making sculptures. There is no fee for the Hutch School Summer Camp.
Things to know:
Number one – We have FUN! Everyday at camp is something new, we try to get outside as much as we can during the summer and we explore all the fun spots of Seattle. We also incorporate art as much as we can and use our creativity throughout the summer. Number two – We all make friends! When you come to the Hutch School Summer Camp you already have something in common with the people around you – we are all going through challenges while we are here and it is great to be around people who understand. You meet people from all over the United States and important friendships are made. Number three – we ask that you bring a sack lunch everyday – we are on the run and having that lunch handy is always nice! There is nothing like eating peanut butter and jelly on the beach! Of course, if there is a day when appointments take precedence over making a lunch – we will be able to help out!
Registration for summer camp can happen any time from now until the 16th of June. If you are unable to register during this time, please come any time between 9:00 am and 10:00 am on the first day of camp, the 28th of June. Hutch School will be closed from the 17th to the 27th of June. If you are unable to attend the registration days or if you arrive later in the summer you can register for camp any day, 15 minutes prior to the start time of camp. There will be three staff members for camp - Micheline Palmer, current Program Coordinator for Hutch School, Maggie Chambers, current High School teacher, and Alicia Steinruck, Summer Camp counselor. Children enrolling in camp must have had completed kindergarten.
Taking place the same length of the summer camp we have the Patient Tutoring Program! We have a certified teacher who will be available to tutor inpatient and outpatient pediatric SCCA patients during the summer as well!
